In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Iran has claimed to have shot down a U.S. F-15E fighter jet over its territory on Friday, April 4, 2026. One of the two crew members aboard the downed aircraft has been rescued by U.S. forces, while a search operation is underway for the second crew member, a weapons systems officer.

The incident marks a rare occurrence, as it is the first time a U.S. crewed fighter jet has been shot down in combat in over 20 years. The F-15E, a two-seat multirole combat aircraft, was reportedly brought down by Iranian air defenses.

In a separate incident on the same day, an American A-10 Warthog attack aircraft also crashed in the Persian Gulf region after reportedly being hit by enemy fire. The pilot of the A-10 was able to eject and was subsequently rescued. Two U.S. search-and-rescue helicopters involved in the operations also came under fire, with some personnel sustaining injuries, though both aircraft returned safely to base.

Iranian state media has released footage of the wreckage of the downed F-15E and has offered a reward for information leading to the capture of the missing crew member. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incidents and stated that the downing of the jet would not affect ongoing negotiations with Iran, emphasizing that “it’s war.” The escalating conflict has led to a significant increase in oil prices and has impacted global financial markets.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has not immediately responded to requests for comment on the specifics of the incidents. The Pentagon has also not yet officially confirmed the exact circumstances of the crashes or the status of those onboard. The incidents underscore Iran’s continued ability to retaliate despite U.S. assertions of air superiority.
