A suicide attack on a security post in northwest Pakistan has claimed the lives of 14 police officers. A splinter group of the Pakistan Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, which involved a car bomb and a subsequent shootout. The incident occurred in Bannu, a district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, late Saturday, May 9, 2026. Rescuers worked to recover bodies from the rubble, with three other officers reported wounded. Security forces have initiated an operation to apprehend those responsible.

In other news, a crucial Atlantic Ocean current system, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which plays a significant role in stabilizing Earth’s climate, has been observed to be weakening over the past two decades. Scientists from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science have provided strong evidence of this slowdown, which could lead to altered weather patterns globally, including more extreme storms, changes in rainfall, and colder winters in Europe and North America. This weakening could also influence sea-level rise along coastlines.

Meanwhile, in Antarctica, researchers have discovered that hidden warm-water channels beneath ice shelves may be accelerating melting from below, potentially leading to a faster rise in global sea levels than previously anticipated. This phenomenon could make even the seemingly stable regions of East Antarctica more vulnerable. Current climate models may not fully account for this process, suggesting that future sea-level rise projections could be underestimated.
